Parasite Number 1 At Japanese Box Office. Bong Joon-ho’s film ‘Parasite’ made a big hit and became the top box office in Japan last weekend. It is 15 years after ‘Eraser in my head’ in 2005. According to a Japanese high school news agency on the 17th, Parasite ranked first in the box office with sales of 370 million yen (about 4 billion won) at 276 theaters nationwide over the past two days (15-16). Cumulative sales totaled 2.49 billion yen (approximately 27.6 billion won).

This is followed by ‘Eraser in My Head’ (2005, 3 billion yen) with Jung Woo-sung and Son Ye Jin’s breathing in Korean movies released in Japan, and ‘Outing’ (2005, 2.75 billion yen) with Bae Yong Joon and Son Ye Jin. It ranks third in the box office rankings. Last weekend, the 2nd place in Japan’s box office was occupied by ‘1917.’ The parasite, which was unveiled on December 27 last year, was fifth in the box office in its initial release, but after winning four crowns such as a work award at the 92nd Academy Awards on the 10th of this month, it overtook the top of ‘1917’ and Japanese films.

The main Japanese daily newspaper, Mainichi Shimbun, published an editorial that praised parasites on the 13th, saying, “In Japan, where animation and Disney works are popular, it is hard to expect the commercial success of highly social works.” He also predicted that the parasite will boost the back of Japanese cinema.
