Prince Dowan At first Rejects The Variolation Procedure
This episode started off with Prince Dowan questioning the doctor Mo-Hwa about the procedure she’s using to cure the people. Mo-Hwa who was somewhat confident about her method told the Prince that it was pus taken from pigs, according to her this method has been proven succesful in western countries and have worked to cure several children since she has arrived in the affected villages.
The people who live in these areas fear the idea of using this procedure and have overtime formed believes that one can grow a cow’s tail, or can turn into a cow if they use this method.
At first, the Prince was fixed on his rejection of the practice but had a change of mind later on.
Mo-Hwa and Goo Hae Ryung Becomes Acquainted
While working in the villages, Goo Hae-Ryung approached Mo-Hwa and complimented her that she’s impressed by her actions to care for the sick rather than running away like the others.
Mo-Hwa who noticed that Goo Hae Ryung was caring for the sick with her bare hands inquired if she has ever caught the virus.
Goo Hae Ryung later told her that as a child she was once cured by the variolation method. Mo-Hwa seemed surprised which may suggest that she was the one who performed the procedure.
Further on in this episode, we saw where Second State Council Min had found out that Mo-Hwa is in the villages working and sent his men to capture her, however, Goo Hae Ryung’s brother was able to rescue her.
Goo Hae Ryung Persuaded Prince Dowan To Consider the Variolation Procedure
After returning to the villages to check on the sick lady and her daughter, Hae-Ryung was met with a very sad situation after finding out that the little girl she helped the previous day had died. She blamed herself greatly for this because she had the opportunity to save a life and but failed to do so.
It was then she visited the Prince Dowan’s quarters and begged him to consider the medical procedure.
At first, Prince Dowan objected after learning that this procedure may be harmful to humans. However, after Hae-Ryung explained that while it can be used to harm people, it works effectively in curing the disease.
During the night the Prince read a report on the procedure and its effectiveness and was later influenced to give it a try.
Prince Dowan Makes Bold Decision and Wins the People’s Trust
After a long night of pondering, the Prince informed his people that he will give the variolation procedure a try but he will first do so on himself. Shocked at this, Eunuch Heo along with the others begged him to not use his royal body as trial.
Meanwhile, Goo Hae Ryung is blamed and scolded by Historian Min for her interference in the Prince’s change of mind. She was told that it is not the job of a historian to intercede but to record no matter how dire the situation. Knowing Hae-Ryung she could not sit back and do nothing.
After publicly taking the procedure, the Prince fell ill for 3 days. However, he later recovered and was in good health. This gave the people hope in curing their illness and dismissed the stories they’ve heard of for decades.
After part taking in this procedure the Prince along with Historian Min went about the village and helped with feeding the children and making the fire and although they were terrible at it, the people were able to witness their efforts up close.
This move that Prince Dowan made showed his growth as a Prince. He is no longer the unknown Prince that was exiled, but he is now someone the people love and adore for his honest and pure work.
The King Scolds Prince Dowan
At the palace, it was reported in the Royal meeting of the actions of the Prince. The King who had ordered that the procedure be discontinued, later found out that the Prince ignored his command.
Hence when Prince Dowan came back to the palace he was met by an angry King who slapped him across the face.
His brother, the Crown Prince saw what was happening begged his father to give Prince Dowan another chance.
I honestly believe that the King is not upset that the Prince ignored his order and saved the people but he is angry that this person who he despises so much, has done something great and is now acknowledged by the people.
I look forward to seeing the Prince’s continued growth in the coming episodes.
